Description :
Land use changes progressing in the last two decades are the result of political and socio-economic transformation. Their effect is the retreat of agriculture from mountain areas and a reduction in the intensity of certain geomorphic processes, alongside an intensification of others. The rise of processes like floods and landsliding is connected with a higher frequency of heavy rainfall events. Only in the eastern part of the Polish Carpathians did a rapid retreat of agriculture begin earlier, due to a transfer of the Ukrainian population after the Second World War. In contrast, in the western part of the Polish Carpathians these changes were delayed, progressing slowly in the wake of socio-economic change. Both the socio-economic and the climatic factors should be taken into consideration when it comes to the forecasting of changes in regional planning and land use. – (BJ)
