From 1962 until 2011, Burma was ruled by a military junta as the decades passed. In 1988 the massive anti-government movements were suppressed, and harsher authoritarian rule followed. The 2010 general election was followed by a shift to a new regime in March 2011. The reforms and Aung San Suu Kyi’ s decision to participate in the new parliament have created a favorable international environment. The U.S. eased the financial sanctions on Burma in April 2012. Since 2011 the reform has been widely accepted inside and outside of Burma. But the power structure created by Ne Win has remained intact. The direction that Myanmar takes will be determined by the interactions between its enduring military-centered power structure and the newly freed opposition under a charismatic leader. - (GL)
