The Company's Island : Saint Helena, Company colonies and the colonial endeavour

Auteur :
ROYLE, S.

Description :
This book focuses on the island of Saint Helena, whose strategic importance lay in its location that made it a vital refuelling stop for ships returning to Europe from India and the East. It was annexed for Great Britain in 1659 by the East India Company, which had to bring in settlers from Britain, Africa and elsewhere. Tensions between soldiers and settlers, whites and blacks, Company interests and those of the Crown became unbearable. This study exemplifies the difficulties the Company encountered in meeting the requirements of the Crown whilst attempting to run a harmonious and successful community. - (HC)
