Peripheral location of borderland between Poland and Russia, due to low level of economic activity and population, contributed to conservation of valuable natural amenities. Most valuable areas like Vistula Lagoon and Romincka Forest cut across the border, constituting Transborder Protected Areas. Cooperation in the sphere of environmental protection with the Kaliningrad District includes mainly environmental education and exchange of experiences by members of the local governments. The result is lower number of executed projects and investment concepts than possible. The EU financial support allows developing further, more effective transborder cooperation. - (BJ)
