Description :
European regions are territorial units of different size and character. There is a wide variety, ranging from urban and small rural regions to large European cross-border regions. All are undergoing rapid changes. The changes of the European political landscape in wake of 1989/1990 initiated a redefinition process of the border between Eastern and Western Europe. The enlargement of the European Union in 2004 created a new framework for policy options and restructured the development of border regions on both sides. In this paper an attempt is made to outline the conditions and tasks of crossborder cooperation at the EU internal borders between Austria and the new EU member countries (A, CZ, SK, H) and the twin-cities Görlitz (D) and Zgorzelec (PL). Examples from the external borders are the twin-cities Narva (EST) and Iwangorod (RF) and the “Euroregion Carpathia” (H, PL, SK, RO, UA). - (IfL)
