Description :
The southwestern province of Yunnan is not only very rich in bio- and geodiversity, it is also the most diverse ethnical province of China. Despite its impressive economic growth it belongs to the poor western provinces of China. It is expected that the Chinese GDP is quadrupling between 2001 and 2020 and in the same period the demand in energy is doubling. In this scenario hydroenergy gets assigned a prominant figure and Yunnan a key position. In the above period the production of hydroenergy should quintuble in Yunnan and the province is becoming the most important provider of energy in China. For that reason many new prestigious dams and hydropowerstations are planned or have been already under construction. Some of them are even controversial within China. Contrary to the Three Gorges Dam many of these disputed projects are either not known in the West or getting rarely a focus of discussion there. - (IfL)
