Mitteldeutschland is a region that lacks administrative status. However, in history and geography the toponym has a long tradition, and today it occurs with increasing frequency in public discourse. Following the constructivist idea that a particular region is not naturally given but permanently produced in manifold, yet not arbitrary ways, the paper proposes an alternative, rather relational regional geography. As such, it is critically engaged with the question of how different regions, all named Mitteldeutschland, are realized in different contexts of communication such as science, economy, politics, culture and the media as well as day-to-day talk. The analysis of these fields shows a certain dominance of Mitteldeutschland being pictured as the territory of three states Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. - (IfL)
