In Hungary, requirements and conditions of different kind and importance, objective and subjective, strict or soft have always been set for settlements in the preparation process of the proclamation of urban status. The requirements and conditions have been based upon the actual political interests reflecting the economic and social circumstances of the given era. On the other hand, the correlation between proclamation and politics is not always evident or it cannot be disclosed in each case. In the study only those cases were investigated, where the influence of politics could be traced easily. - (AM)
