Description :
The aim of this investigation was to discover the reason for the lack of reproduction of a very dense population of pearl mussels. The factors taken into consideration were water quality, quality of the substrate, land use and water regulation, which all could have a negative effect either on the mussels themselves directly or on the brown trout which is the host for the first life-stage of the mussels. The river chosen for the investigation was the River Lillån which had been surveyed for the status of the pearl mussel population in 1997 by the county administrative board of Gävleborg, Sweden. On that occasion the length of 170 shells was measured. The most likely reason for the lack of reproduction seems to be the water regulation of the main stream introduced 60 years ago, which has left the main stream dry seasonally.
