The aim of this investigation was to study the influence of the herbaceous vegetation cover on the hydrological response of reclaimed mining soils by means of simulated rainfall, in a Mediterranean-Continental environment (central-eastern Spain). The effect of herbaceous vegetation cover on soil hydrology was analysed by means of rainfall simulation in reclaimed soils derived from opencast coal mining (a non-saline and clay-loam textured spoil). The simulation experiments were conducted at 3 different times throughout the year (late winter, summer and autumn) to control the influence of seasonal climatic fluctuations. Experiments were carried out at different times throughout the year to assess the seasonal influences on soil hydrology. As a practical objective, the AA. aimed to identify an optimal threshold of vegetation cover to achieve satisfactory biological control of soil hydrology in the studied environment.
