This special issue provides a selection of papers (7/24) that were presented at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly in Vienna (April 2007) in session GM19 on Quantifying and modelling human and climate controlled sediment dynamics. The scope of the papers cover issues of sediment production, storage and transport for a range of fluvial environments in the United Kingdom, Belgium, Peru, Germany and China. These papers provide a representative sample of the current-day research on the human impact on sediment dynamics, the methodologies used and the spatial and temporal scales considered.
