This progress report focuses on sea-level change over timescales of direct relevance to human societies. It begins with an update on recent patterns and rates of sea-level rise before describing some improvements in the understanding of ocean volume change with particular reference to the role of ice-sheet dynamics. It also examines the coastal impacts of abrupt events such as storms, hurricanes and tsunamis, before concluding with a brief comment on the relationsheep between sea level, coastal change and society.
