An often discussed question is whether modern technologies can help developing countries to overcome hunger and poverty. In the past, the technology-driven Green Revolution already helped prevent famines in India. Yet, the country still faces the challenge of reducing widespread poverty. This article the potential role of a new agricultural technology - genetically modified (GM) crops, which emerged in what is sometimes called the gene revolution - in helping address this challenge. The first example described is the development and cultivation of insect-resistant GM cotton and the second example shows how the introduction of another GM crop, nutritionally enhanced rice (Golden Rice). -(IfL)
