Description :
The M´zab valley, situated in the northern Algerian Sahara, was proclaimed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982. The valley has been settled by Berberian Ibadis - followers of a minor Muslim firqa (confession) - since the 10th century. They founded five fortified towns (ksour) with a remarkable urban layout and a specific architecture. Since the 1960s, the M´zab valley has been changing in its social, cultural, political and also physiognomic and architectural aspects. The paper discusses the recent transformations of the M´zab valley and strategies for safeguarding the authenticity and integrity of this World Heritage Site. - (IfL)
