Description :
The aim of selecting an optimal scale is to determine the grid cell for the monitoring of land-use and to investigate the scale law of land area in the Tarim River Basin in Xinjiang, which will allow a maximum diversity of the land types in unit grid area, facilating the ground experiment design and the remote survey in the future. Selecting the suitable scale consisted of 3 steps : 1) area mode is derived from statistics of frequency distribution of areas of the land types in the Tarim River Basin; 2) according to the mode of the area, the normalized scale variances (NSV) was calculated and the suitable scale of the ecological monitoring was discussed; 3) the diversity indices and the fractal dimension figured to supplement the methods and validate the results of NSV.
