Daly was president of the New York-based American Geographical Society from 1864 to 1899 but also was a judge in New York, rising to the post of chief justice in the court of common pleas. He led numerous social and civic reform societies in New York and was a prolific writer on many topics in addition to his work on geography. He was a most effective practitioner of geographical description and also took an active role in land-development programmes in the USA and elsewhere. - (HC)
