Description :
Marion Newbigin was one of the founding pioneers of British geography in the early 20th century, and the only woman to be recognized as such. A graduate in zoology, she obtained a higher doctorate in 1898, and was appointed editor of the Scottish Geographical Magazine (1902-32). She never held a full-time post as a university teacher but lectured in many institutions and wrote influential work on many themes, including biogeography, political geography, and regional work on the Mediterranean lands. She also produced influential textbooks for use in schools. - (HC)
