Refusing the waste, parting from it, is what makes culture possible. The distinction between what is rubbish and the rest of things is the core of that imperceptible struggle between life and death, which sets value to things. This defining process, which includes the ways in which waste is managed, generates local conflicts which attempt to redefine the values determined by the treadmill of production. In recent years conflicts appear to have increased in number and intensity. Sustainability oriented political evaluations face the limitations of optimistic positivism, while new, unexplored participatory scenarios are opening up. - (NF)
