The world desertification reminds immediately the portrait of a desert, although deserts are natural ecosystems which grow and pull back during centuries. In this article, are shown several definitions used to describe the desertification; in it are also explained some methodological ties and knowledge fundamental to observe the phenomenon and its background; finally is given a practical example of one of the most harmful problems for central Africa, the gradual disappearance of the hydrographic basin of lake Chad, that is responsible of most of the water of four wide countries, in one of the most dry region of the world. - (NF)
