This paper presents the results of winter monitoring of ground surface temperatures in the alpine zone of the Tatra Mountains, at sites found to have, or to lack, permafrost in the course of previous investigations. The results reveal that: (1) the conventional interpretation of the results of permafrost mapping using the BTS method may be deceptive; (2) contemporary permafrost in the alpine zone of the Tatra Mountains develops under both thick and thin snow cover, and its existence is probably mainly connected with the local circulation of cold air over the ground surface. - (BJ)
