Description :
The number of orphans is increasing in Africa, mainly due to HIV/AIDS. This has led to the establishment of child-headed households. Their number in the informal settlements in Nairobi is estimated to constitute about 5-10 per cent of all households. Squatter settlements in Embakasi, the South-Eastern division of Nairobi, are known to be threatened by mungiki, a criminal sect. Soweto, Kayole, Kiambiu informal settlements etc. are no - go areas - not only for strangers, even for those who live there - at least from dusk till dawn. The article analyses how child-headed households make their living in such an environment. The livelihood approach is used to identify the young people´s assents and vulnerability. The results give an insight into the country´s governance situation. - (IfL)
