History of modern Burma

Auteur :
CHARNEY, M.W.

Description :
Useful contribution to the study of Burma. It examines Burmese History from the annexation until the devastation of Cyclone Nargis in 2008. Among issues plaguing the country are the relationship between the Burman-dominated lowlands and the ethnic minority-dominated highlands. The current regime did not change the association of wealth and political power. According to the A. the slow pace of reform after 1990 is partly due to its intellectual and ideological hollowness. After 2007 monks have been partly cowed but the basic problem facing the SPDC remains its relation to monkhood whose participation in the demonstrations showed that legitimacy rested with the democratic opposition. - (GL)
