Burma/Myanmar. What everyone needs to know
Auteur :STEINBERG, D.I.
Description :
This former British colony has one of the most secretive military authoritarian regime, yet it houses a Nobel Peace Prize winner who has been in and out of house arrest for two decades. A picturesque land with mountains jungles, monsoon plains, dry zone and mangroves, it is extraordinarily ethnically diverse with officially 135 nationalities. The longest rebellion in the world still operates here (Karen). A very large Buddhist monk population captured the attention of the west when it faced off against the military regime in 2007. It experienced one of the worst natural disaster in modern times in 2008. Strategically located, it is important in Chinese and Indian defense and economic considerations. - (GL)
