Measuring and modelling the actual energy involved in aggregate breakdown

This paper further develops the concept of establishing an aggregate hierarchy by recognising that aggregate breakdown may result in the redistribution of smaller particles throughout any arbitrarily-selected set of soil particle-size intervals and, the dynamics of particle-size redistribution can be described as a function of dispersive energy. To achieve this, soil samples representing Vertisols and Ferrasols are assessed by simultaneously modelling the dynamics of aggregate breakdown in a range of soil particle-sizes (<2μm to 2000 μm) as the increasing dispersive energy of aggregates by ultrasonics. Surface samples from the top 300 mm of soil from 5 sites throughout New South Wales, Australia, where collected for this study.
