The aims of this paper are: 1) to examine physical and chemical properties of biological soil crust (BSC) and underlying 0–5 cm surface soil in 3 dominant plantations in Horqin Sand Land, located in Naiman County, in the eastern part of Inner Mongolia; 2) to compare the differences in physical and chemical properties of BSC and surface soil between vegetated plantations and mobile sand dunes; and 3) to analyze the causes of differences in BSC and associated surface soil properties among 3 vegetation types (semi-shrub, shrub and tree). The sudy was conducted during August, 2005 and 2006. Results and discussion about future planting.
