Effects of scale and data source in periglacial modelling in a High Arctic environment, western Svalbard

To elucidate the effects of modelling scale and data source in distribution modelling, 2 periglacial features with differing physical requirements, sorted circles and solifluction lobes, were analysed on western Svalbard. For the comparison of modelling scales, data at 2 resolutions were used and a boosted regression tree (BRT) method was employed. To analyse the effect of data source, a generalised linear model (GLM) and a variation partitioning method were used to examine the unique and shared effects of the environmental variables on the distribution of sorted circles and solifluction lobes in a High Arctic landscape. Methodologically, novel statistical techniques and earth observation data provided an efficient combination for analysing periglacial landforms and processes in this remote region.
