During the past two decades Dubai has undergone a transition from a small trading town to one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Several spectacular projects like the tallest tower (Burj Dubai), the largest man-made island (Palm Jebel Ali) or the largest theme park (Dubailand) caused a world-wide sensation leading to a rising number of tourists traveling to Dubai each year. This paper analyses the development and the succes of the tourism sector in Dubai. A main focus will be on the staterun tourism agency, the expansion of the tourist infrastructure and the world-wide promotion of the destination in the sense of an economy of fascination.
