The article deals with the Russian city of Kaliningrad (former Königsberg) and its urban development, history, architecture and identity. After Second World War Russia tried to impose the ideal of a Soviet city and to deny the historical German identity. After Perestroika the development stagnated. Today the reconstruction of different historical landmarks is discussed controversially (for example the deeply symbolic Königsberg castle). This paper gives an overview in the current city development in Kaliningrad and investigates the interrelations between the conception of history, symbolic architecture and local identity in the city. - (IfL)
