The paper analyses two peripheral rural regions : West Eifel in West Germany and West Pomerania in East Germany. Both are affected by demographic change and there are many similarities between the two regions, but also serious contradictions. The demographic change does not have the same effect in both research areas. This article looks under which specific conditions the explosiveness of the demographic change will intensify or diminish. - (IfL)
