Description :
The article deals with the suburbanisation of jobs, the urban spatial structure, the metropolitan areas, the jobs housing balance, the commuter volume and the commuting distances. In order to identify how different urban spatial structures affect commuting behaviour, monocentric (Hamburg, Munich) and polycentric regions (Frankfurt am Main, Stuttgart) are compared. The analysis is based on commuting data between 1999 and 2007 taken from the German Social Security Statistics. - (IfL)
