A tale of two cities : reestablishing cultural identities in Eastern Europe

Auteur :
GIVENTAL, E.

Description :
The paper is based on the A.'s observations of contemporary cultural landscapes in the cities of Krakow and Lviv, which prompted the analysis of the observed differences through the prism of Jewish minority dynamics. With parallel histories and convergent landscapes, the cities experienced dramatic changes in the 20th century which reduced the Jewish population. After the return of democracy, they acquired dissimilar cultural identities (revival of Jewish culture in Krakow and obliteration in Lviv). The unevenness of nation-building processes resulted in the advancement of Polish cultural plurality and Ukrainian nationalism.
