This paper introduces the Digital Earth project, created and supported by the former USA Assistant President Al Gore in 1998. After a brief description of the DE linked projects outside the United States, the geobrowsers are introduced. These software tools are DE connected and derive from GIS methodology. A critical analysis of the geobrowsers are reported in the last part of the paper, with particular attention to their potential uses from a scientific and a teaching point of view. - (NF)
