The present paper takes the World Wide Web twenty ear birthday occasion in order to briefly introduce the WWW story, from the Internet origin, in 1969, to the current so called “Web 2.0” era. Some important repercussions of the Web evolution to the geo-cartographic sector are underlined. The geobrowsers (3d Earth visualisation), and the so called Internet “free participation cartography” are remembered. At last, some critical remarks about these cartographic tools are given, with particular reference to their agreement with the cartography rules and uses. - (NF)
