Description :
This article presents the regional distribution of patterned ground in Poland, as this involves lowland terrain glaciated by the Scandinavian ice-sheet and mountains. The patterned ground occurring away from mountains is in the form of fossil large-scale non-sorted polygons, and can only be observed on aerial pictures taken under conditions of suitable weather, lithology and land use. The polygons attest to permafrost conditions during the last Pleistocene glaciation. In turn, in the alpine periglacial zone of the Polish Carpathians and Sudetes there are active small-scale sorted nets and thufurs. Nevertheless, large-scale sorted polygons, nets and stripes are usually relict, the main period of development having occurred during the late Pleistocene. – (BJ)
