Badlands of the Republic : space, politics and urban policy
Auteur :DIKEÇ, M.
Description :
This monograph provides a comprehensive account of urban policy in France whilst incorporating reflections on space and politics. It also examines the politics of immigration and the contemporary transformations of the state in France. The A. challenges overarching generalizations that tend, in the anglo-saxon literature, to be based almost exclusively on the British and North American experiences. It focuses on the revolts in the banlieues of French cities during 2005 and covers related topics such as those associated with citizenship, identity and immigration. Attention is drawn to the role of the police in the suburbs, the quest for social justice, and labelling of dangerous neighbourhoods. Particular stress is placed on the example of Vaulx-en-Velin. - (HC)
