Throughout her stay in Burma as a nun the A. had the opportunity to frequent the Rangoon's main meditation centers, understand the life of the devotees and study their connections with both the actors of religion and politic. Her book is made of five parts : 1- Rise of the new laity and the restitution of ternary order. 2- The phenomenology of Satipatthâna Vipassana Meditation. 3- Sacred giving and the politics of sincerity. 4- The double order of law. Monks, gender and resistance. 5- From relation of power to relations of authority. The dynamics of symbolic legitimacy. The A. particularly study the military's regime encouragement to the Buddhist civil society to subsidize its projects. She describes some of the many ways to collect money from rich donors such as the jewelers. Relations between the regime and the rich members of the laity are driven along the chain of relation patron-clients. Meanwhile, the religious resistance of the society to the aim of political legitimacy of the military regime, is still perceptible through the actions of some monks refusing, on the criteria of the sincerity of intention, the donations emanating from the military dictatorship. - (GL)
