Asian godfarhers : money and power in Hong Kong and South East Asia
Auteur :STUDWELL, J.
Description :
The work is divided in three parts. 1- Godfathers of yore. 2- How to be a post-war godfather. 3- Godfathers of today : defending the precious. After the Second World War a small group of South-East Asian billionaires contributors to what the World Bank called the East Asian miracle, came to dominate the domestic economies of the five funding members of ASEAN, plus Hong Kong. These six economies are linked by powerful unifying themes, most importantly, similar historical legacies and a very particular relationship between political and economic power. The Asian godfathers are a common symptom of a common set of circumstances. Fifty families are the economic story of the region and control its wealth. Following their biographies, the A. shows that the role of the states' tycoon businessmen have been under-estimated and under-reported by academic and journalist commentators. Studwell lifts the lid on a world of hypocrisy, power abd enormous wealth. In appendix, he gives the story of the main families of Asian godfathers. - (GL)
