Slavery in Arunachal Pradesh

Auteur :
KUMAR THAKUR, A.

Description :
The book analyses the emergence of the private property and existence of social stratification among the hill tribes in Arunachal Pradesh. The A. questions the validity of the myths of egalitarianism and non-hierarchism among the tribes. The book attempts to provide an alternative perspective of study of tribal societies of north-east India, Burma and Tibet. The themes studied : origin of slavery, position of slaves and abolition of slavery. Although the abolition process started in Arunachal Pradesh 180 years ago, the measures taken are still unable to wipe out the problem fully, 3500 slaves are still waiting for their liberation. As history has caught up with the Puroik after centuries of back waters, unavoidable changes, sometimes unwelcome, are coming fast in the Puroik community. - (GL)
