Geoplitics of European Union enlargement

Auteurs :
ARMSTRONG, W.
ANDERSON, J.

Description :
With enlargement, the EU has argued that it must elaborate strategies to contend with a fiercely competitive world, and also build fortress-like defences against perceived tensions arising from greater cultural mixing and threats such as terrorism. This book examines the EU's internal and external borders, and the processes of rebordering and social change currently taking place. Such issues as security, immigration, economic development, and changing social and political attitudes are examined, as well as the EU's relations with the Islamic world and with other world powers. The book offers detailed case studies of border regions and the concerns of local inhabitants, as well as engaging in broader discussions of developments accross Europe and the EU's relations with bordering states. - (HC)
