Description :
Yakutsk, capital of the republic of Sakha within the Russian Federation with 232.000 inhabitants and an area of about 135 km2, is the largest city in the world built on permafrost. The socio-economic transformation over the past 15 years has resulted in a restructuring of private and public transport and led to a dramatic increase of traffic density. In the physical setting of permafrost, this contributes to severe environmental problems which were analyzed in a series of studies executed by the Institute of Geography of the University of Bremen with the support of the German Science Foundation and in cooperation with research institutes in Yakutsk. - (IfL)
