The hydrological regime of the Yangtze, the longest river in Asia and third longest in the world, is closely connected with the seasonal sequence of wet and dry seasons observed in Monsoon Asia. Specifically, the heavy rains appearing between May and October often give rise to catastrophic floods in the basin of the Yangtze, a problem to which much attention is paid in Chinese hydrological literature, albeit mostly by way of the descriptive method, rather than theoretical analysis - which is very much lacking. This paper thus presents results obtained where a different approach is taken to the analysis of flood phenomena in the basin of Asia's longest river. The methodology utilized is based on mathematical and statistical calculations widely applied in analysis of the course and magnitude of floods. - (BJ)
