In the late Glacial and Holocene, Central Europe came under the influence of volcanic ash deriving from four centres of vulcanism, i.e. the Phlegrean Fields near Naples, the Massif Central, the Eiffel Massif and Iceland. These create levels of tephra that are recognisable macroscopically and are now present within marine, lacustrine and peatland deposits. Their identification and correlation over greater areas is of major significance to chronostratigraphy and the reconstruction of environmental changes affecting Central Europe over the last 15,000 years. - (BJ)
