The article presents the role of soils in the system of the natural environment, also pointing to diagnostic features used in describing the evolution and functioning of that system. A critical look at the development of the Polish school of soil geography and its participation in the development of geography as a discipline was also attempted. Note was taken of the increasing interest geographers - especially in Europe and the United States - are taking in studies of soil cover, as well of the international community's greater appreciation of the significance studies of the pedosphere have when it comes to better understanding the megasystem that is the geographical environment. - (BJ)
