Description :
The article presents the main population phenomena that have characterised the Polish population through the 20th century, commencing with the situation applying to the polish lands in the newly-independent state post-1918, and continuing through to the middle of the first decade of the 21st century. The aim of the study has been to outline : changes in the distribution of the population - with particular attention being paid to areas undergoing depopulation, changes in natural movement as the waves of increase induced by the post-War baby boom have been extinguished, transformations in the fertility model and the entry into a period of declining population nationally, changes in internal migration, with steadily declining significance of rural-urban migrations and (in recent decades), and an increasing role for urban-rural migration with all the consequences this has as regards migration losses from towns and cities. Changes in the population's age and sex structure have also been presented. - (BJ)
