In the paper, a brief characterisation of gender-related studies is followed by a presentation of the daily mobility of men and women inhabiting selected rural areas in Poland. The consequences of railway closures for passenger traffic are in particular analysed. These differ markedly in relation to the gender concerned. The research reveals the much more disadvantaged situation faced by females when it comes to commuting to places of work or schools, to do the shopping or to visit healthcare facilities. The explanation is provided by gender studies. - (BJ)
