The paper presents the appearance, development and downfall of the doctrine of Lebensraum (living space) and his historical conditioning. The work of its founder, Friedrich Ratzel, and his numerous successors, is outlined, prior to a characterization of the attempts, the German made at actually conquering a Lebensraum in the East. The influence of the doctrine on Nazi ideology, including on Hitler and Himmler themselves, is emphasized, and attention is paid to the geopolitical consequences, most especially as regards German politics in the first half of the 20th century. - (BJ)
