Casale Monferrato nel tempo

Casale Monferrato à travers les âges

Auteur :
ROSSO, L.

Description :
Casale is a small town (37000 inhabitants) located in eastern Piedmont, on the right bank of the Po river. Thanks to its favourable position, in the 15th century it became the capital of the Marquisate of Monferrato and the eat of a diocese. Two centuries later, while under the control of the Gonzaga family, it was fought over by the most important European powers of the time. Its economy had for centuries been agricultural, but it came to an important turning point in the second half of the 19th century with the establishment of the cement industry, helped forward by the wealth of limestone deposits that can be found in the surrounding area. At the present time, the sector of public utilities is steadily on the increase and likely to keep developing. - (NF)
