The Párano belt in the Ecuadorian Andes situated between 3,200 and 4,500 meters, takes an important function for the supply and storage of water. The thesis provided the first time comparable quantitative data about the agricultural expansion over the grassland zones in the tropical humid Andes. In the last 30 years there has been an important change in land use patterns replacing the natural grassland cover by settlements and cropland. - (IFL)
