Description :
The project aims at mapping the area underlain by permafrost and simulating the ongoing degradation of permafrost due to climatic warming. This paper presents the results of the field observations undertaken in 2003-2004. The fieldwork involved monitoring of ground surface temperatures and sounding of seismic stratigraphy, which were undertaken at several sites in the source area mainly along the R214 road that connects Xining and Yushu. The elevation of the measurement sites varies from 3260 m to 4790 m in ASL, which most likely crosses the boundary between the permafrost and seasonal frost areas.
