The rural peripheries of the EU candidate countries are faced with monumental challenges in the context of european integration and globalization. The article portrays how the Romanian mountainous regions are even today being influenced by the EU and manifestations of economical globalization. The heterogeneity of the relationships between the centre and periphery will be highlighted using the example of pre-accession aid for agriculture in the context of a rural area primarily characterized by subsistence economy on the one hand and the activity of global investors in the gold mining sector on the other hand. The peripheral region thereby will be a stage for the societal correlation between dependency and exclusion. (IFL)
